Police investigating report of a bike theft in progress last week wound up arresting a man and a woman in connection with the theft. The two also face other charges as a result of items police found after the arrest.
On Thursday (June 6) at around 7 p.m., police responded to the 39000 block of Government Road, where they located a 35-year-old man and 31-year-old woman, both from Squamish, whom RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride described as "known to local police."
The woman also had an outstanding warrant for her arrest from another jurisdiction, Pride said. As well as "a quantity" of methamphetamines, police found a stolen identity in their possession. In addition to the theft charge, the pair face charges for possession of a controlled substance, and the woman is facing a charge of identity theft.
Items stolen
Police also dealt with at least two separate incidences of thefts from vehicles last week. On Tuesday (June 4), Squamish RCMP received a report of a vehicle having been broken into on the afternoon of Monday (June 3) several kilometres up the Mamquam Forest Service Road. The pickup truck's canopy was broken into and stolen were an iPhone, a 14-carat wedding ring, a grey Arrakis Arc'teryx backpack, a Shark Freestyle watch and clothing. The total estimated value was $2,500.
On Friday (June 7), police received a report of a vehicle having been broken into overnight in the 1000 block of Jay Crescent. The vehicle may have been left unlocked, police said. Stolen were a wallet containing around $200, a gold necklace with diamonds and a set of jumper cables.
Bikes swiped
Two more mountain bikes wre reported stolen during the past week. On Wednesday (June 5), police received a report that a bike had been stolen from a home in the 38000 block of Clarke Drive sometime between midnight and 8 a.m. A black and red, men's 21-speed Specialized bike had been left locked under the home's patio, but the lock was cut. The bike's value was around $700.
On Sunday (June 9), police received a report that a bike had been stolen overnight from the bike rack of a hotel in the 38000 block of Progress Way. The bike had been locked to the rack, but the lock had been cut. The bike was a white and grey, 21-speed Giant Trance X, valued at around $3,500.
Man arrested
On Wednesday (June 5) at around 1:50 a.m., police responded to a report of a disturbance at a home in the 38000 block of Buckley Avenue. At the scene, police arrested a 24-year-old Squamish man for assaulting his 25-year-old girlfriend during an argument.
Business entered
A Britannia Beach business was broken into on Thursday (June 6) sometime between 3:45 and 7:20 a.m. A rock had been thrown through the glass window of a door and the door frame was damaged to gain access. Stolen was approximately $1,000 in cash, and the damage to the building was estimated at about $1,000.
