A busy pre-Christmas period for Squamish RCMP included at least four incidents involving the seizure of drugs including one that saw officers seize some 18 pounds of marijuana that apparently was bound for Whistler.
On Dec. 20, police stopped a pickup truck for speeding on Highway 99 near the Cat Lake turnoff, RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride wrote in a statement issued on Monday (Dec. 31). The officer noticed the smell of marijuana and upon further investigation, located 18 pounds of pot in a large hockey bag. The substance was divided into large ziplock baggies and those were sealed in plastic packaging. A 29-year-old Whistler resident is being charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking.
On the same day, police conducted a traffic check on two males, a 32-year-old Squamish resident and a 23-year-old Pemberton resident. During the stop police located a large container with 98 grams of hashish, 18 grams of vacuum-sealed marijuana and several crack pipes. Both face drug-related charges.
On Dec. 21, Squamish RCMP executed a search warrant at a home in the 38000 block of Chestnut Avenue in relation to alleged threats made over the Internet. Police arrested two Squamish men, aged 28 and 29. The first is being charged with uttering threats. The latter is facing firearms in relation to the seizure of four handguns, three rifles and two shotguns, and drug charges related to the seizure of marijuana, scales and a quantity of cash believed to be associated with drug trafficking, Pride said.
On Dec. 22 at around 11:15 p.m., police pulled over a vehicle on Highway 99 near Clarke Drive for a traffic violation. A 26-year-old man was arrested for an outstanding warrant for possession for the purposes of trafficking and is also being charged with having a weapon for a dangerous purpose after a container of mace was found in his possession. During the encounter, a 55-year-old Squamish woman, who was also in the vehicle, became aggressive and assaulted a police officer, Pride said. Inside the vehicle police discovered approximately nine grams of methamphetamine, five grams of cocaine, one gram of heroin as well as two scales, bear spray and a crack pipe.
Driver faces charges
On Dec. 21, police received a report of a vehicle having crashed into the Sea to Sky Hotel on Tantalus Road. The driver, a 50-year-old Squamish man, fled the scene but was arrested shortly thereafter while walking along Diamond Head Road. The man was taken to Squamish Hospital to be treated for injuries sustained in the incident. He faces charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failing to remain at the scene and failing to remain at the scene.
Assault charges eyed
On Dec. 20 at around 1:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a woman screaming at a home in the 1200 block of Main Street. At the scene, officers found a 22-year-old woman and 28-year-old, both of Squamish and described as well known to police. A verbal dispute had turned physical, with the woman having sustained a bloody nose and the man a stab wound to the chest. The woman faces a charge of assault with a weapon and the man a charge of assault.
Truck stolen
Also on Dec. 20, police received a report of a 2006 Dodge Ram truck having been stolen the previous night while parked in the 41000 block of Government Road. The vehicle was fond rolled over in a ditch on Squamish Valley Road. Police are investigating.
Business targeted
On Dec. 22, police received a report of a break and enter at a tow yard in the 1100 block of Enterprise Way. A fence had been cut to gain entry and an officer had its lock pried off. Two dirt bikes, a computer modem, monitor and tower, and a debit machine were stolen. One of the bikes, as well as the computer items and debit machine, were found on a trail nearby. A pair of bolt cutters was also found. Those with information are asked to call Squamish RCMP at (604) 892-6100 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
Confinement charge eyed
A 36-year-old man is facing charges of assault and forcible confinement in relation to an incident that occurred last Wednesday (Dec. 27) at 9:30 p.m. at a home in the 2400 block of Mamquam Road. A woman at the scene alleged that during a dispute, her boyfriend had assaulted her and physically prevented her from leaving the home after the assault occurred, Pride said.
Items stolen
On Wednesday, Dec. 27, police received a report of a vehicle having been broken into while parked in the 4000 block of Diamond Head Road between 6 and 10 p.m. A Dell laptop computer, passport, multi-tools and a camera were stolen.
Vehicles damaged
Also on Dec. 27, three vehicles were reported as having had their windows smashed while parked at a car dealership in the 40000 block of Government Road. The incident occurred sometimes between Dec. 24 at 7:30 a.m. and the morning of Dec. 27. Apparently nothing was stolen.
