McRae named economic sustainability coordinator

DOS official to focus on enhancing capacity of Squamish's business community

The District of Squamish this week announced the hiring of a person with many years' experience in business, securing grant funding and managing community economic development projects as the district's economic development coordinator.

Dan McRae, who has a bachelor's degree in entrepreneurial management and is just finishing certification in project management, was announced as the successful candidate in a statement issued by DOS officials late Tuesday (June 28).

McRae will be responsible for completing the objectives outlined in the DOS's 2011-'15 Economic Development Strategic Plan, facilitating business development and working with local business groups "to enhance capacity within respective scopes of work and capitalize on major events in the community," the statement said.

"Today's economy continues to be a major focus for Canadians and an increased effort on economic sustainability is more important than ever locally," said Mayor Greg Gardner. "Council is pleased to add this position to the District organization and we believe Mr. McRae will be an asset to our organization and a benefit to our community."

Said McRae, "Many studies have shown that the majority of a community's job growth is derived from existing businesses, so I am excited about a mandate to focus on a business retention and expansion program."
