The money raised will be spent on commemorating the eccentric figure

Update: This memorial fund has since been stopped, at the family's request, organizers say.

A memorial fund at the Encorp Squamish Bottle Depot has been set up in memory of someone who may be considered to be the town’s greater recycler — Terrill Patterson.

Bianca Peters of the Squamish Historical Society said Steve Shard set up the fund, which is open for the general public.

Anyone can contribute to the fund by bringing in refundable containers. The depot, however, cannot accept cash.

The money will be spent on a memorial for Patterson, and the historical society is looking for ideas, which can be submitted at [email protected].

Patterson, a 76-year-old Squamish resident, died on April 24.

Upon news of his death, many came forward with fond memories of their encounters with the eccentric figure, who many considered to be a local icon.

He was often seen riding his bike around town with bags full of empty recyclable containers.
