Two serious motor-vehicle accidents, one of which resulted in serious injuries to a motorcyclist, caused headaches for driver on Highway 99 south of Squamish on Sunday (Sept. 8).
The first crash occurred at around 1:45 p.m. just north of Lions Bay, Squamish RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride wrote in a statement.
A northbound motorcycle veered into southbound traffic, colliding with two southbound vehicles, Pride said. Another motorcyclist who was trying to avoid the accident collided with one of the vehicles. The driver of the second motorcycle was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the motorcycle that veered into oncoming traffic refused to provide a breath sample and faces a driving prohibition and a charge of refusing to provide a sample, Pride said. The crash resulted in the closure of Highway 99 for part of the afternoon.
A second crash involving four vehicles occurred near Porteau Cove on Sunday at around 5:30 p.m. Police believe the crash may have occurred when a driver who had a medical issue lost control of his vehicle and struck two others, one of which hit a fourth vehicle, Pride said.
All four vehicles sustained extensive damage and while two passengers were taken to Lions Gate Hospital to be checked for minor injuries, the driver who is believed to have lost control was being evaluated for the issue that may have caused the crash, Pride said.
Officers assaulted
On Saturday (Sept. 7) at around 1:30 p.m., police attended a home in the 37000 block of Fifth Avenue to assist B.C. Ambulance on a medical call. The residents and tenants, whom Pride described as well known to police, had been drinking, while another man at the scene was having medical issues.
While ambulance attendants were trying to assist the man who was having medical issues, a 56-year-old woman was arrested for obstructing them, then assaulting a police officer who intervened. After being taken to the police detachment, the woman assaulted another officer, Pride said.
Bike stolen
On Sunday (Sept. 8), police received a report of a mountain bike having been stolen from the front of a home in the 38000 block of Sixth Avenue. The bike had been locked to a pillar in front of the home and was described a silver Marin 18-speed bike, valued at approximately $1,000.
