A 24-year-old Squamish man arrested last week on suspicion of drug trafficking is also under investigation for possible involvement in a business break-and-enter.
Last Wednesday (April 3) at around 2 a.m., Squamish RCMP received a report of a break-and-enter in progress at a business in the 38000 block of Cleveland Avenue, RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride wrote in a statement.
A resident had heard noises at the business and when he checked, he found a male inside. The suspect fled southbound on Cleveland. A police service dog was called in but officers failed to track down the suspect, Pride wrote. Items at the business were seized for forensic examination and a description of the suspect was provided to police.
About an hour after that incident, a police service dog handler who had attended the break-and-enter checked a 24-year-old man on a bike near Buckley Avenue. The man was found in possession of "a quantity" of marijuana and cocaine, individually wrapped, as well as an air pistol that closely resembles a real handgun. Both were seized. Authorities are evaluating a charge of possession for the purpose of trafficking and are looking into the possibility that the man was involved in the earlier break-in, Pride wrote.
Door pried open
Last Tuesday (April 2), police responded to a report of an alarm at a business in the 38000 block of Cleveland Avenue. A door had been pried open, but nothing was apparently stolen as the suspect was apparently scared off by the alarm. Police who viewed surveillance video of the incident were able to identify the suspect as a 41-year-old Squamish man described as "well known to police." He was located later the same day and arrested for the break-in.
Lockers broken into
Also last Tuesday, police received a report that three storage lockers at a facility in the 37000 block of Second Avenue had been broken into, their locks having been cut off. Police are awaiting information about what may have been stolen. Items at the scene were seized for forensic examination.
Woman arrested
Last Tuesday at around 6:40 a.m., police responded to a report of a suspicious female in the backyard of a home in the 1800 block of Mamquam Road. At the scene police located a 30-year-old woman from Whistler, who provided police with a false name and "poor justification for her activities," Pride wrote. She was found in possession of items from the backyard of a nearby home and arrested for possession of stolen property. Further investigation revealed a laptop computer believed to have been stolen from a local business and a small amount of drugs.
Vehicles damaged
On Friday (April 5), police received a report of two vehicles having been broken into while parked at an auto dealership in the 39000 block of Queens Way between 4 and 6 a.m. The vehicles had their windows smashed and were rummaged through, though police did not have a list of stolen items. A male was seen in the area riding a BMX bike, entering the property from Commercial Way and exiting onto Queens Way.
Lock damaged
Also on Friday, police received a report of an overnight break-and-enter at a business in the 38000 block of Cleveland Avenue. The lock to the front door had been damaged to gain entry, but apparently nothing was stolen.
