There may finally be housing on the long-abandoned Aqua development site in downtown Squamish.
Robert Ciccozzi Architecture Inc. has submitted a rezoning application on the property at 1212 Main Street in downtown Squamish.
The proposal was presented at the May 19 council meeting.
If approved, the project would include 61 contemporary-styled townhouses, according to the district.
The site has sat with just the foundation and a partially completed underground parking garage for six years.
One of two planned apartment buildings and a number of townhouses were built starting in 2007, but in July of 2009 the project with its original developer went into receivership, leaving the project unfinished.
The new proposal is for townhouses rather than the planned apartments so involves lower density than the original plan. The rezoning will also revise the building height and parking stalls required, according to the district.
For the new Surrey-based developer, which has never before built a multi-family complex, the project is about a good business investment.
“How we started [there] was a business opportunity… and the more I started looking into the Squamish market, we got more excited and we really want to finish it,” said Sunny Ghai of SRV Investments.
“Squamish is a growing community so we want to bring the project there.”
Ghai said construction on the project would begin as soon as it got the go-ahead from the municipality.
The rezoning application is in the initial review phase, according to district staff.
