Campers stuck

Several campers have been stuck since Sunday due to a washout of a forest service road over Mud Creek in the Squamish Valley. Squamish Forest Service’s Scott Shaw-MacLaren told The Squamish Chief on Wednesday that the campers could walk out, but could not take their vehicles.

Forest Service crews were hoping to have a detour in place by Thursday to allow the campers to drive out, he said.

We’re No. 15

Squamish was ranked 15th of 25 communities on the 2016 ranking of Canada’s Best Places for Business.

The ranking was released late last week and was tabulated by media outlets Canadian Business and PROFIT. They are based on factors such as cost, market trends and business friendliness collected from various sources and participating municipalities, according to a news release by the outlets.

“The ranking is designed to help entrepreneurs and executives make smarter decisions on where to start, expand or relocate their enterprises,” the release said.

Mayor Patricia Heintzman said Squamish has been rapidly advancing in terms of its attractiveness to business and the “ranking highlights some of the successes we are seeing.”

Celebrate crosswalks

An official dedication and ribbon-cutting will take place at the rainbow crosswalks at Cleveland and Victoria on Saturday at 1 p.m. The public is welcome to come out and support the colourfully painted crossings with district leaders and members of Safe’n’Sound, the group that spearheaded the crosswalk campaign.
