Library event for families

Attention Squamish parents and kids: The Squamish Public Library is inviting families to come and celebrate Literacy Day on Wednesday, Feb. 1 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event also marks the official unveiling of the new children’s area at the library.

There will be story sharing, games, cake and much more at this free event. Mayor Heintzman will be on hand to share her favourite picture book.

Families are invited to bring or take out their favourite books as well. Everyone will go home with a prize.

Local company makes top 5

Squamish’s Sea to Sky Air is one of the top five finalists for the 14th annual Small Business BC Awards. The five businesses vying to win the Premier’s People’s Choice category of the awards will now face a Dragon’s Den-style panel of business experts who will determine the winner in each category between Feb. 6 to 14.

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Vancouver on Feb. 23.

Art and activism

(Please note this workshop has been postponed)

Artists Jay White and Genevieve Robertson are inviting Sea to Sky residents to voice their concerns about the proposed McNab Creek gravel mine and the Woodfibre LNG project.

They are hosting a workshop, “Pinhole Cameras and Pipelines,” at St. Monica’s Church in Horseshoe Bay at 1 p.m. on Jan. 28 that will teach people how to make pin-hole cameras that they are planning to install near the proposed sites in February.

The artists did a similar project along the route of the proposed Kinder Morgan Pipeline expansion in Burnaby.

More information can be found by searching for “Pinhole Cameras and Pipelines” on Facebook.

MP goes back to law

Former Conservative Party Sea to Sky MP John Weston has gone back to law.

Weston has joined McMillan, LLP, a business law firm, and its affiliate national public affairs firm, McMillan Vantage Policy Group. He will focus on indigenous and  government affairs, and Pacific Rim transactions, according to a news release from his office. He will work out of the firms’ offices in Vancouver and Ottawa. Last Saturday, he hosted a discussion on the theme of “moving people to excellence,” which is highlighted in his upcoming book, Lighting People’s Hearts on Fire-Seeking Excellence in Leadership.

Dream, Girl

Dream, Girl, a documentary highlighting women who are leaders in businesses, ranging from brand-new start-ups to million-dollar industries, is coming to Quest University Thursday, Jan. 26.  The screening, at 7 p.m., will be followed by an informal panel featuring female leaders in Squamish. All proceeds go to the Howe Sound Women’s Centre.
