Emergency workshop

The District of Squamish is hosting an interactive emergency workshop especially for seniors, Thursday. Participants will learn how to build a grab-and-go bag, according to a news release from the District.

The event takes place from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at the Squamish Seniors’ Centre as part of the national Emergency Preparedness Week activities. Parking is available underground below centre.

Signs on the way

Squamish’s new signage and wayfinding program will be evident around town this summer.

The signs are currently being manufactured, according to District of Squamish staff.

Phase one will include: two Squamish gateway signs at the north and south ends of town on Highway 99; two downtown signs (north and south, also on Highway 99); and a series of vehicle and pedestrian/cyclist signs downtown, at the Squamish Adventure Centre and Brennan Park along Loggers Lane.

“This phase will allow us to test a variety of aspects of the wayfinding system and make any adjustments before rolling out future phases. Priority setting for phase two will follow,” stated a news release.

It will take five years for all the signage and wayfinding to be in place. Phase one will cost $221,500 in 2017. The proposed total budget is approximately $1.3 million.

Fish for the Nation

For the first time in its history, the Squamish Nation’s annual free community fish distribution includes canned, not fresh, salmon.

The reduced sockeye runs and fishers to catch them has led to the change, according to the Nation.

Last year, no salmon was distributed due to low sockeye returns that led the Fisheries and Oceans Canada to close the sockeye fishery in August.

The canned fish, with the Squamish Nation logo, is an effort by the band to continue the distribution of the salmon, which is culturally and spiritually important to First Nations, Coun. Chris Lewis said in an interview.
