Help the horses

A fundraiser for rescue horses is set for Saturday night. Second Chance Cheekye Ranch rehabilitates, trains and finds homes for horses in troubled situations and those bound for slaughter across North America.

So far the ranch owners have rescued 31 horses, they say.

The event to raise funds in support of the work, which will be held at Cheekye Ranch 60001 Squamish Valley Road, will include live music acts, food, a silent auction and of course, time with horses including pony rides.

The fun starts at 1 p.m. and run until 6 p.m. on Sat, July 15. For more information go to www.cheekyeranch.com/ and click on “events.”

District borrow money?

If you don’t agree, you have to let the District know.

Council is considering taking out seven loans totalling roughly $8.6 million. If you don’t agree with the borrowing you have to let them know. The elector alternative process includes $4,896,549 for vertical expansion of the landfill; $1,414,141 for dike work;  $454,545 for the Cleveland-Main to Victoria streetscape upgrade; $505,051 for water main replacement; $782,828 for a new roof for the Forestry Building; $595,051 for Fire Rescue aerial apparatus; $540,404 for Squamish Fire Rescue capital work.

If you do not approve of one or more of these loans pick up authorized elector response forms at Municipal Hall. Each loan has its own form. Deadline for forms is August 21. If  1,353 electors or more have signed and submitted forms against the loan(s) council may not adopt the bylaw to approve the financing.   Those in favour of the loans don’t have to submit anything.

New construction times

It will be a little bit of a reprieve from the sound of hammers and other construction-related noise. The District’s noise bylaw has been changed.

It is now an offence for construction noise to start on weekdays before 7 a.m. or continue after 8 p.m. Previously, construction could carry on until 9 p.m.. On Saturdays, the noise can’t start before 8 a.m. or continue after 7 p.m.. On Sundays and statutory holidays the pile drivers and backing up trucks can’t get started before 10 a.m. or carry on after 4 p.m. Previously, the bylaw said before 8 a.m. or after 7 p.m. on Sundays and stats.

Get amped

Young and talented?  Free jams will take place at Amped in the Park, an open performance series to be held at Junction Park & O’Siyam Pavilion all summer long.

The student-led initiative aims to support and promote youth performers in the district.

The organizers are looking for more acts to jump on stage. All emerging artists are welcome, including aspiring actors, comedians, dancers and any other type of performers who want to take to the stage.

Apply today at [email protected]

Thanks to a grant from the District of Squamish, the organizers have all the equipment performers may need.

Planned Amped in the Park evenings run July 27 (Squamish Wind Festival), August 3, 10, 17, 24, 31.
