News Briefs: Moving on. New Commuter Bus.

Here is this week's New Briefs roundup
There is another commuter bus coming to Squamish.

Moving on

Fifteen of the 19 residents at the Riverside Trailer Park in Brackendale have signed an agreement with the Squamish Nation indicating they will be leaving the park as required. Those who have not signed continue to be on month-to-month tenancy, Squamish Nation Coun. Chris Lewis told The Squamish Chief.

All residents must vacate by Sept. 30, 2017. The tenants were given eviction notices last month because, according to the Nation, the park is no longer financially viable and there are health and safety concerns with continuing to keep it open. Sewer and water systems need to be updated, Lewis previously told The Chief, and the cost of the upgrades would be prohibitive. Of the 15 who have signed the agreement, three say they will move by Dec. 31, to take advantage of the $9,600 cash offer from Squamish Nation; Two say they will be leaving by March 31, 2017 to take advantage of the $4,800 offer. Five say they will move by Sept. 30, 2017 and five have not picked a date yet, according to Lewis.

Asked what would happen if some of the remaining residents refused to leave Lewis said, “The park is closing Sept. 30, 2017 and no residents will be allowed to remain after that point.”

New commuter bus

A new daily bus route run by Islandlink Bus Services will help commuters get from  Squamish and Whistler. The bus departs from two locations in Squamish – on Pemberton Avenue between Second and Third avenues and at Executive Suites Hotel & Resort – at 7 a.m. and arrives in Whistler 50 minutes later. It leaves from Whistler Village at 5:30 p.m. Round-trip fare is $20, but 35 per cent can be saved for frequent riders who make reservations through islandlinkbus.com.

Engineering WFLNG

Engineering firms KBR and JGC America, both of Houston, Texas, were awarded contracts for Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) of Woodfibre LNG’s liquefied natural gas facility, it was announced this week.

These two groups will conduct the FEED in parallel, according to a Woodfibre news release.

“KBR and JGC are world leaders in LNG engineering and design,” said Byng Giraud, vice-president of corporate affairs for Woodfibre LNG. “And we are very pleased that they are providing their world class expertise to our Project.”

“By awarding the FEED contracts, we are also sending our strongest signal yet that the Woodfibre LNG Project is close to becoming a reality.”

The decision on which group will be awarded the EPC contract will be based on their engineering, procurement and construction proposals that will be submitted at the end of the parallel processes.

Lights, camera, action

Film crews will be downtown on Thursday morning filming a commercial for Supercuts in the lobby of The Chieftain Hotel. Some parking along Cleveland Avenue will be affected.

On Wednesday, crews planned to film an arrest scene for a movie with actors dressed up as police officers near Winnipeg Street and Second Avenue.
