News briefs: Oceanfront update. Dock named to honour retiree.

Here's this week's news briefs including what's happening at Squamish library
Alex Taimuri and Rick Kormendy, right.

In honour of a long-time employee, Woodfibre LNG has named the dock at its site Rick’s Landing, after site supervisor Rick Kormendy.

Kormendy’s last day of his 45-year career was Friday. He worked his entire career at the Woodfibre site, according to a news release, and even once lived at the former pulp mill town site on the property. For the past few years, he has been commuting to the site from his home in Langley.

Oceanfront work underway

The Oceanfront Lands will be a beehive of activity in the coming months.

Dirt is already being moved around on the property, which officially sold Feb. 3 to Newport Beach Developments.

Road grading and site works for the planned UBC facility are currently underway. Geotechnical drilling for the main road was completed in March.

Company representatives say they plan to roll out a website and Facebook page so curious residents can keep up with the progress. Both are expected in the coming weeks.

The Nexen Beach Loop Trail will likely stay open throughout the summer, although parts may be blocked if required for construction or safety issues, according to Newport.

The road will remain open, and there are no immediate plans to remove the slacklines at the water’s edge.

Work is beginning on the park and also on various other parts of the project simultaneously.
