Numerous businesses broken into

Briefs from the Squamish RCMP

RCMP dealt with a rash of break-ins to businesses Thursday (April 15).

At 11:05 p.m., a suspect smashed a large front window and stole merchandise from inside a store. A police service dog attended and was unsuccessful in tracking the suspect.

Once the owner and police were able to enter into the store, a review of the video surveillance shows a male known to police smashing the window and leaving with the merchandise. The matter is still under investigation to locate and charge a suspect.

Coincidentally while police attended with the property owner, an intoxicated male stumbled onto the scene and did not notice the police officers, police dog and handler or owner and took it upon himself to try to enter the store.

The intoxicated 19-year-old male was arrested and held in cells until sober and released with a charge of being intoxicated in public.

At 5:46 a.m. on the same day, an audible alarm was received from a business on Cleveland Avenue. Members attended Sunsational Vacations and found the front door smashed out. The property owner arrived and confirmed that suspect(s) had entered the business and stole a 42-inch Panasonic flat screen TV. The matter is still under investigation.

Also on Thursday (April 15), an employee called to advise that suspect(s) had broke into a business at 1365 Pemberton Avenue, a wooden crate was used to enter the building by smashing a second floor office window. A motion sensor to the alarm system was damaged and torn off the wall. Once inside suspect(s) stole a Dell laptop computer and projector, both in carrying cases. The matter is still under investigation.

Assault suspect arrested for cocaine

On Thursday (April 14) at 5:30 p.m., a member on patrol spotted a local 36-year-old male wanted for questioning in an assault on a female, which had occurred earlier in the week.

The male was arrested, detained and searched incidental to his arrest. The search revealed cocaine in his possession. He will appear in court May 12 to answer to the charge of possession of cocaine.

Cyclist struck

On Sunday (April 18) at 7:30 p.m., police and BC Ambulance Service attended to a residence on Government Road where a 45-year-old woman was struck off her bicycle while cycling near the Spit Road. The male who struck her was driving a red vehicle. He stopped and then fled the scene. A witness came by and called for assistance. The victim was transported to hospital for treatment. Police are asking anyone who was involved or witnessed the incident to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

New playground vandalized

On Sunday (April 18), just a few days after its grand opening, RCMP received a report of vandalism to the new playground on Arrowhead Road at Ross Road. Suspect(s) turned over and damaged picnic tables and spray painted graffiti on the climbing wall and trees in the immediate area. A small purse was located and seized and may lead to further knowledge of those responsible for this senseless act to equipment that is just a couple of weeks old. Neighbours said they heard a group of youths in the area overnight but did not call it in.

Trailer stolen

On Wednesday April 14, a trailer owner reports that a 17-foot, black, flat deck trailer bearing B.C. licence 03982Y and valued at $5,000 was stolen from a property on Pemberton Avenue. The trailer was last seen on the property in the past month.

Vehicle broken into

On Monday (April 19), a vehicle owner called to report theft from his vehicle overnight while parked on Valley Drive, A black overnight bag with clothing, shoes and an iron along with an IPhone and Silver Canon Digital camera were stolen.

Copper wire stolen

On Monday (April 19), an employee of Cobra Electric reports that approximately 650 metres of copper wire valued at approximately $3,000was stolen from light standards along Copper Drive.

Drunk driving suspect arrested

On Monday (April 19) at 5:39 a.m., a member on patrol stopped a black F350 Ford pick up, which was observed driving erratically on Cleveland Avenue. The 38-year-old male driver displayed symptoms of being impaired by alcohol and was returned to the detachment for breathalyzer tests. The male refused to supply samples of his breath and will now appear in Provincial Court June 16 to answer to impaired driving and refusing to supply breath sample charges.
