Oceanfront work underway

This week's news briefs roundup
Work on the Squamish Oceanfront is moving forward.

Activity on the oceanfront has begun. Geotechnical drilling for the main road at the oceanfront was completed last week, according to a Newport Beach Development news release.

Site work for the university building is starting this week and will involve tree clearing and basic site preparation. UBC has plans to set up a campus at the oceanfront.

The development will make further updates as construction progresses, according to the release. The sale of the Oceanfront Lands became official Feb. 3.

The property will ultimately be one-third residential housing, one-third employment facilities – including the university – and one-third park, according to the plans.

Mining for spring break

The Britannia Mine Museum has dug up a host of events to keep school aged children busy during spring break from March 19 to 27.

Daily hands-on activities and events will include historical photo talks, demonstrations from the upcoming Science of Water exhibit, interactive mineral workshops, arts and crafts, and lessons on building tetrahedron kites.

Zoning changes adopted

Council adopted the 2016 update of the district’s Zoning Bylaw at its meeting Tuesday evening.

The package of updates included changes to allow child-care businesses with up to 16 children in multi-unit residential complexes and secondary suites, and changes to support smaller-living lifestyles by eliminating minimum building width and minimum dwelling unit size provisions in all zones.

The changes also include a zoning change that would make way for a recreational ropes course business at the Squamish Adventure Centre overflow parking lot.

Beautiful Me event

A free women’s night and fashion show, Beautiful Me, for women 19 and older is planned for May 27 at Totem Hall. Organizers are currently looking for female entrepreneurs who own their own business and would like to participate in the empowering event.

Activities will include a clothing auction, fashion show, wine and cooler bar, hair and makeup demonstrations, vendors and a silent auction.

All proceeds from the event will go to the Menkis Youth Group.

Tickets for the event, which runs 7 to 11 p.m. on May 27, can be picked up at Totem Hall.

Entrepreneurs interested in participating can contact Mara or Lindsay at 604-892-5166.

Business bylaw changes

The public will soon get to weigh in on a freshened up Squamish business licence bylaw.

An open house will be scheduled following council’s approval of the draft of the revised bylaw at Tuesday afternoon’s corporate policy standing committee.

One proposed change is a food truck or temporary vendor would be able to operate from any number of parcels of land within the district under one licence, and more than one licence holder could operate on the same piece of land as long as the land is zoned for such a business. For 2015, business licences brought in $199,134, and expenses in administrating the licences came to $151,232.
