Weekly briefs from the Squamish RCMP

A Squamish man is facing charges of assaulting a police officer and obstructing justice after he allegedly became belligerent and allegedly assaulted a police officer who was investigating an incident involving the suspect and another man.

On Monday (July 11), Squamish RCMP responded to a report of a disturbance involving two males in the 40000 block of Government Road in Garibaldi Estates, RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride said in a statement.

During the investigation, one male became belligerent and as the officer was making an arrest, the man physically assaulted one of the police officers, Pride said. A 54-year-old Squamish resident is facing charges of assaulting a police officer and obstruction of justice.

Tools stolen

Also on Monday, police received a report of a business break-and-enter in the 39000 block of Queens Way. A suspect or suspects gained entry by cutting through a fenced compound and attempted to steal an all-terrain vehicle. Tools used at the business were stolen. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to phone Squamish RCMP at (604) 892-6100 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Bike thefts probed

Police are also investigating the recent theft of a couple of bikes. On Friday (July 8), a custom-built Norco Shoe men's mountain bike was reported stolen from the 3700 block of Cleveland Avenue in downtown Squamish. The words "Dan O" were etched onto the bike's swing arms, Pride said.

On Sunday (July 10), an orange-coloured Stidder run bike was stolen from the 42000 block of Government Road in Brackendale. Police are seeking the public's help in their investigations of the thefts, and are reminding citizens to secure their bikes and record their serial numbers.

Hiker injured

On Sunday, police and Squamish Search and Rescue responded to a report of a young male who had fallen in the upper part of Shannon Falls Provincial Park. The victim was located and airlifted out of the area. He was treated at Squamish General Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, Pride said.

The suspect is described as approximately 20 years old, 5 feet, 9 inches tall, heavy set, with a dark complexion, short brown "buzz cut" hair, wearing a white T-shirt and long shorts.
