The camera shakes for a few seconds before zooming into a sight that, for many nearby residents, was out of the ordinary.
Spotted milling in and out of August Jack’s Motor Inn were several police officers wearing what looked like dust masks, latex gloves and safety goggles.
One officer is even spotted with a rifle in the video, which was posted onto Facebook that afternoon.
After repeated inquiries from The Chief, the RCMP have confirmed there was an investigation at the motel on June 3.
“There was a marked response by Squamish RCMP,” said Cpl. Sascha Banks in a written statement sent to The Chief.
However, the nature of exactly what happened that day still remains unclear.
“This is an ongoing investigation and therefore we are unable to provide additional information on it at this time, but will do when and if an information is laid,” said Banks.
“An information” is another term for a formal criminal charge.
The Chief contacted the desk at August Jack’s and asked if there was anyone willing to provide comment, but was referred to a person who was unwilling to go on the record.
Regarding a separate series of unrelated investigations, The Chief queried the police about rumours swirling around town about several fentanyl-related deaths in the Squamish and Britannia Beach areas.
Banks would not say whether fentanyl was involved, but did say that “we have investigated a few sudden deaths that are not being investigated as suspicious.”
She did not elaborate on the details of what may have caused the deaths, only saying that the BC Coroners Service was now involved.
When contacted, the coroners service said it couldn’t reveal the cause of death for cases under investigation. The service also said it would not be identifying any possible victims at this time.
