A team of two student B.C. Used Oil Management Association (BCUOMA) ambassadors will hit five locations in Squamish Wednesday (Aug. 25) in hopes of education locals on the perils of oil waste.

The team is touring the province promoting the responsible recycling of used oil materials while also encouraging British Columbians to continue to keep these hazardous materials out of our water streams and landfills.

"Given that even a single drop of motor oil can contaminate one million drops of clean water, it is imperative that B.C. communities understand the importance of responsibly recycling used oil, used oil filters and plastic oil containers," states a BCUOMA news release. "With recovery rates of used oil materials increasing each year in British Columbia, the BCUOMA is launching its fifth annual summer ambassador program."

To prevent contamination and spills, residents are encouraged to bring them back to a registered return collection facility during regular business hours.

From 9:30 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, the duo will be at Canadian Tire, Diamond Head Motors Ltd., Fred Hinchcliffe Automotive, Kal Tire and Newport Auto Inc.

The ambassadors are travelling in a new Volkswagon Jetta TDI, a clean diesel that has 25 per cent less emissions than regular gasoline engines. And they'll also be talking about the upcoming antifreeze and antifreeze container recycling program that launches July 1, 2011.
