One injured in Squamish stabbing incident

Weekly briefs from the Squamish RCMP

A 37-year-old man was taken to Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver to be treated for stab wounds after an 18-year-old allegedly stabbed the older man during an altercation outside a Squamish house party on the weekend.

On Sunday (April 24) at 10 p.m., Squamish RCMP received a report from Squamish General Hospital that the victim was being transported to Lions Gate suffering from stab wounds to his mid-back, RCMP Staff Sgt. Guy Pollock said in a statement.

The incident took place after a group of males outside the house where the party was taking place got into an argument with the 18-year-old as he was walking down the street, Pollock said. The argument turned into a physical altercation and the older man was stabbed with a knife, he said.

Police investigating the incident identified the suspect and arrested him the next day for aggravated assault. He was held in police custody and then transported to court. In addition to the aggravated assault charge, he faces charges for breach of court-ordered conditions not to possess a weapon and not to be in contact with one of the males who was involved in the verbal confrontation, Pollock said.

The young man is "well known to police," Pollock said, adding that since 2009, his name has been cited on 25 separate files as the subject of the complaint, a suspect, or a person charged with an offence.

Man taken to safe place

A 64-year-old Vancouver man who became disoriented during a fishing outing on the Squamish River was located by the crew of a Department of Fisheries boat and transported to safety.

Squamish RCMP received a 911 call about the man last Tuesday (April 19) at 5:10 p.m. The man, who suffers from Parkinson's Disease, called a friend on his cell phone to report that he was disoriented, RCMP Staff Sgt. Guy Pollock said in a statement.

A police investigator made contact with the man on his cell phone and obtained a description of the man's location. The Department of Fisheries boat was in the area and its occupants were asked to assist, which they did, locating the man before dark and transporting him to Sunwolf Outdoor Center.

Compound broken into

The compound of an auto repair business in the Squamish industrial park was broken into overnight on April 19. The fence at the back of the compound was cut and once inside, the person or persons rummaged through several of the cars. One vehicle had a window broken. Police are reviewing security video as part of their investigation, Pollock said.

Window broken, school entered

On Sunday (April 24) at 6:50 a.m., Squamish RCMP visited Howe Sound Secondary School after a silent alarm indicated that the school had been broken into. Police found a broken window and point of entry. An office inside the school had been broken into, with files and paper thrown about. Police are investigating.

Driver suspended, ticketed

On Friday (April 22) at 9:45 a.m., a Squamish Highway Patrol officer was travelling southbound on Highway 99 at Murrin Park when he noticed a man driving a pickup truck northbound and talking on his cell phone.

The officer turned around, caught up with the vehicle and pulled it over. While talking to the driver, the constable noticed the smell of liquor and made a demand for a breath sample. The driver blew a "warn" on a roadside screening test and was issued a three-day roadside driving suspension. He was also ticketed for using an electronic device while driving and had his vehicle impounded, Pollock said.

Joy-riding teen nabbed

On Saturday (April 23) at 12:30 a.m. a Squamish RCMP member on patrol on Garibaldi Way saw a 16-year-old male standing on the bumper of an SUV while it was being driven in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven store. The officer stopped the vehicle and learned that it was being driven by an unlicenced 16-year-old girl, who had taken the vehicle without her parents' permission. The girl was ticketed for driving without a licence and her parents were contacted. They came to retrieve their daughter and the vehicle, Pollock said.
