Ottawa shooter worked in Squamish

Man who killed Cpl. Cirillo was in Squamish for the Ashlu Creek hydro project

Ottawa killer Michael Zehaf-Bibeau was in Squamish about eight years ago doing tunneling work for the Ashlu Creek hydro project, which was done by contractor Frontier-Kemper.

On Oct. 22, Zehaf-Bibeau shot and killed reservist Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, 24, and then stormed Parliament, where Zehaf-Bibeau was then shot dead.

“I have indeed heard that Michael Zehaf-Bibeau was working for our contractor on the project, but do not have further details on this,” Bas Brusche, director of Innergex public affairs, told The Squamish Chief by email.

Innergex contracted the work for the tunnel out to Frontier-Kemper.

“Hiring, training, scheduling, salary payment, staff management etc. fell under [Frontier-Kemper’s] responsibility,” said Brusche.

Construction on the project began in August of 2006, and the facility started operating in December 2009, according to the Ashlu’s project website.

According to a CBC report Nov. 19, Zehaf-Bibeau, 32,  was earning upwards of $90,000 a year, but spent little of it and drove a 1994 Nissan Pathfinder Zehaf-Bibeau said was given to him as a gift.

According to CBC, Zehaf-Bibeau did do some things that in hindsight are suspect. He showed co-workers videos of Taliban ambushes and at least once joked about being a suicide bomber.

Representatives of contractor Frontier-Kemper did not immediately return The Chief’s request for an interview.
