Pipeline open house planned

Comments sought on plan to upgrade natural-gas line serving Woodfibre

A public open house is planned this weekend on a proposal by Fortis B.C. to upgrade the natural gas pipeline to serve the proposed Woodfibre LNG facility.

Fortis is proposing to expand the pipeline running from Coquitlam to Woodfibre. The existing pipeline, which was constructed in 1990 to serve the Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island, and the expansion would include some 52 kilometres of new, 20-inch (508 millimeter) pipe. A portion of the pipeline runs through the Squamish Business Park, and part of the upgrade would be the construction of a new compressor station in or near Squamish, according to a public notice for the project.

The proposed pipeline upgrade is under review pursuant to B.C.'s Environmental Assessment Act and the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office is seeking comment on the proposal. Open houses are planned in Squamish and Coquitlam. The local open house takes place Saturday (Nov. 16) from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Executive Suites Hotel, 40900 Tantalus Road. A second open house is planned next Thursday (Nov. 21) in Coquitlam.
