Police officer kicked
A woman faces a criminal charge of assaulting a peace officer after a police officer was kicked on Tuesday, July 7, according to Squamish RCMP. Earlier in the night, police received a report of an intoxicated woman breaking a glass at Cliffside Pub in Valleycliffe, leaving the pub and driving away, police said.
Police located a woman in her vehicle and initiated an investigation that resulted in the woman receiving a 90-day driving prohibition, police said. During the course of the investigation the woman kicked an officer several times, according to the report.
Attempted carjacking
A family visiting Squamish from the U.S. was startled when a man banged on the window of their vehicle and demanded the vehicle while they were stopped in traffic downtown on Tuesday, July 7, police said. The family managed to drive away. An officer later saw a man matching the description of the suspect yelling at the driver of another vehicle at the corner of Victoria and Second Avenue. The driver said the man had backed into her while she was stopped at a stop sign, according to police.
The officer noted that the man smelled strongly of liquor, the report indicated. The suspect got into his vehicle and drove away.
The officer was able to stop a suspect on Cleveland Avenue approaching Highway 99, and he was arrested. Several charges are being recommended.
Police chase man
A man was arrested and several charges are being recommended after a police chase on Friday, July 10. The man, who had several outstanding warrants against him, was seen by an officer earlier in the day operating an unlicensed scooter in the 41100 block Government Road, police said.
When the officer tried to arrest the suspect, he fled on the scooter along a dyke. The officer intercepted him at Eagle Run and arrested him. The man was carrying a Taser and the scooter had been stolen in Squamish last month, according to Squamish RCMP.
Pistol stolen
A pistol in a gun box was stolen, along with a supply of ammunition and other personal items, from a residence in the 41300 block Kingswood Road on Saturday, July 11, Squamish RCMP said. The investigation is on-going.
Break & enter
Several items were stolen including a passport, $300 in cash, a Nikon camera, a Sony tablet and a Samsung phone in a daytime break and enter in the 1300 block of Zenith Road on Tuesday, July 7, according to Squamish RCMP. The suspects got into the house by smashing a window beside the door to unlock it, police said. The incident is still under investigation.
Police prevent rave
A rave planned over the weekend on Squamish Nation land on Squamish Valley Road was moved to the Lower Mainland after Squamish RCMP, the Integrated First Nations Policing Unit and the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District worked with the Squamish Nation to issue a letter on Friday, July 10, formally notifying the organizers the rave was not permitted on Squamish Nation land, according to police.
Serious injuries in motorcycle collision
A motorcycle rider remains in hospital after suffering serious injuries when he crashed into a tree while he was travelling southbound on Highway 99 in Lions Bay, on Saturday, July 11, RCMP said. He was flown to Vancouver General Hospital, where he remains. The highway was partially closed and then reduced to single lane traffic for several hours while police investigated.
Assault with a weapon
Allen Breitung, 49, of Squamish pleaded guilty on July 8, to assault with a weapon related to an incident on July 7, 2014 at O'Siyam Pavilion Park in downtown Squamish, according to RCMP. He received a two-day jail sentence and a 10-year firearms prohibition and was required to provide a DNA sample and pay a $100 victim surcharge, police report.
Possession of a weapon
Jason Fox, 42, of Squamish pleaded guilty on July 8, to possessing a weapon (a Taser) at a traffic stop on July 5, 2015 and to breaching conditions of his probation during previous incidents that happened on January 11, 2014 and September 9, 2014, police said. He received an 11-day jail sentence, a five-year firearms prohibition and was required to provide a DNA sample and pay a $100 victim surcharge, according to Squamish RCMP.
Fraud
Edward Louttit, 45, of Squamish pleaded guilty on July 9 to fraud stemming from an incident on Jan. 4, 2015 at Money Mart. He received a one-day jail sentence and 12 months probation and was required to pay a $100 victim surcharge, police reported.
