A man was arrested at Chances Casino for assault and being intoxicated in a public place on Saturday, Feb. 20, according to Squamish RCMP.

Security officers from Chances Casino called RCMP around 1:30 a.m. to report an assault in progress.  When police arrived, they learned one of the participants in the fight had repeatedly punched a security guard in the head, according to the police report.

Speed and flight

A driver was arrested for dangerous driving and flight from police on Saturday, Feb. 20, according to Squamish RCMP.

While conducting traffic enforcement at Highway 99 and Depot Road shortly after midnight, an officer saw a blue Chevrolet Sonic make a left turn onto Depot Road when the light was red, police said. The officer turned on his lights and sirens and attempted to stop the Sonic, but it sped off.

The car turned north on Government Road, east on Squamish Valley Road, then south onto the highway. The car was recorded at 175 km/hr, police said. The officer stopped the chase due to the dangerous speed. On duty officers later found the car at Murrin Park. A young man and woman were located outside the car. The man was arrested.

Dirt biker flees

A dirt bike rider eluded police who were on patrol in the 2000 block of Centennial Way on Tuesday, Feb. 16, according to the Squamish RCMP. The rider of the dirt bike dropped a backpack containing copper wire and took off at high speed into trails in the wooded area south of the rifle range, police said.

The dirt bike soon went out of view and the officers were unable to apprehend the rider.

The copper, which police believe was stolen, was recovered.

Meat theft

A man was arrested for theft on Wednesday, Feb. 17, according to Squamish RCMP. Stolen items, including several packages of meat worth roughly $130, were located in the car the man was driving.

Police had responded to a theft in progress at Wal-Mart at 39210 Discovery Way. A man was seen putting items he did not pay for in his car and driving away, police reported.

Police intercepted a car and driver who matched the description provided.

Suspicious package

A citizen flagged down police and turned over five packages of brown powder believed to be drugs that were found on the sidewalk in the 37900 block of Second Avenue on Tuesday, Feb. 16, Squamish RCMP reported. The items were sent to the lab for testing.

Graffiti at Valleycliffe Elementary

Overnight on Feb. 19, the tag “zombie” was left and damage was done to some planters at the school, according to police.
