Shots alarm hiker
A hiker reported to police that he heard shots fired in the area of Skookum Creek Forest Service Road and that rounds had struck a rock surface close to him on Saturday, March 5, police said.
Officers located several people in the area who were target shooting. All had valid licences and their firearms were properly secured, according to Squamish RCMP. The shooters were warned about the risk to others of discharging firearms in the woods.
Large animals on highway
Several large animals, likely elk, were on the side of Highway 99 near Finch Drive on Sunday, March 6, police said. Officers investigated, but the animals had moved back into the wooded area.
Crash
A driver was issued a ticket for driving without consideration after losing control and going into the ditch on Highway 99 in the Lions Bay area on Saturday, March 5, according to Squamish RCMP.
Police said the driver acknowledged he had been speeding, and he was reportedly trying to avoid another vehicle, which allegedly cut him off. No injuries were reported, but the vehicle sustained damage and had to be towed.
Pension fraud
Squamish RCMP received a report on Tuesday, March 1 that someone’s pension fund had been defrauded of $11,585.50. The investigation continues.
Mischief
Workers at the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations office in the 42000 block of Logger’s Lane reported their alarm had been triggered four times the night of Friday, Feb. 26 but not reported until Monday, Feb. 29, Squamish RCMP said. The fence to their compound had also been cut at some point but has since been repaired, police said. There did not appear to be anything stolen from the compound.
