Firearm at Spit

A Squamish resident called the Squamish RCMP to report finding a firearm at the Spit, on Friday, June 24, police said. The gold, .40-calibre, Desert Eagle handgun was on a small sandbar near the shore, just outside of the water. The firearm was partially sunken into the sand, and the resident first thought it was a toy, police said.  The resident quickly realized the firearm was real and called the police. The firearm was seized and will be checked to see if it has been involved in any other police files, RCMP said. The file remains under investigation.

Bee causes crash

A vehicle was extensively damaged, but its three occupants were not injured in a single vehicle rollover crash Wednesday, June 22 on Kintyre Drive that was a result of a wasp in the car, police said. As a result of not wanting to be stung by the wasp, the driver was not paying attention to the road, according to Squamish RCMP.  The driver first struck an unoccupied parked vehicle, before the vehicle rolled, police said. B.C. Ambulance Service checked all three occupants at the scene, and determined they were uninjured, police said. The vehicle was towed as a result of the extensive damage.

Plates stolen

Licence plates were stolen off a vehicle on Monday, June 20, police said. The owner had parked his vehicle on Wilson Crescent between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. and woke to find that both his B.C. licence plates, 921HHC were taken, according to Squamish RCMP. The plates were later recovered.

Plates recovered

Stolen property was recovered on Tuesday, June 21, when Squamish RCMP were conducting foot patrols on Third and Vancouver avenues and noted an abandoned vehicle, police said. The property recovered included three B.C. licence plates, 921HHC, CA506D, 798NMT; two Alberta licence plates BKV7121 and TAY834. Also recovered were two new lawn mowers and one car battery. The items were seized for investigation. The vehicle, which had not been reported stolen, had smashed windows and graffiti all over. Officers noted garbage and property around the vehicle, which is registered to an address in Alberta, police said. The owner does not have an address in Squamish. The file remains under investigation.

Vehicle break-in

A 1998 red Dodge Caravan was broken into while was parked at the Stawamus Chief in the apron parking lot, on Monday, June 20, Squamish RCMP said.  The vehicle was parked at 6:45 p.m. and when the owner returned at 7:45 p.m., the driver's side door was unlocked. The owner’s Lenovo laptop and Kobo Tablet were stolen. There was no damage to the doors, and the owner was sure he locked all his doors, police said. In the back of the van was a black, white and red Metal Mulisha backpack, that did not belong to the vehicle’s owner. Police seized the backpack and are following up on evidence located on the van.

Shannon Falls theft

The Shannon Falls parking lot was again the site of a vehicle break-in. On Tuesday, June 21, a 2008 Honda Civic was parked at the Falls while the car’s occupants went for a short hike, according to police. The owner was only away from the vehicle from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. When the owner returned, an Alberta Driver's licence, bankcards and cash had been stolen from the trunk. There was no damage to the trunk, so the owner does not know how the suspect(s) accessed his vehicle. The file remains under investigation.

Bears scare hiker

The Squamish RCMP were called to assist a hiker who came across three bears as he was walking along the Squamish Estuary trail along Bailey Street, on Tuesday, June 21, police said. The hiker got scared and ran into the water and deep mud. The hiker did not know where the bears went but was too scared to walk out. The police arrived with a conservation officer and they were able to locate and assist the hiker out of the area. The hiker was not injured and added that the bears were not aggressive.

Bear in garbage

The Squamish RCMP responded to a report that there was a black bear rambling through the townhouse complex on Tantalus Road and had gotten into garbage, on Wednesday, June 22, police said. The witness reported no cubs were present, but the bear did have a tag on its ear, police said. B.C. Conservation attended the scene.
