Fallen rock climber
A rock climber fell and hit the rock face, sustaining head injuries and became unconscious at Murrin Park on Thursday, July 21, Squamish RCMP said. The climber needed to be transported to Squamish General Hospital by ambulance, then by air ambulance to Vancouver General Hospital. The climber was considered to be experienced and wanted the challenge of a harder climb. It appears the climber lost grip and was unable to make the further clip, police said. The climber’s injuries are not life-threatening. Victim services were provided to witnesses of the fall.
Liquor store robbery
Shortly after midnight on Friday, July 22, the Squamish RCMP received a complaint that someone was breaking into the BC Liquor Store located at Glenalder Place. A man was seen on security video breaking the bottom glass panel and climbing through the window. The suspect grabbed bottles of alcohol before fleeing on a bicycle. The man is described as 5’9”, Caucasian, wearing a mask black hoodie with a white logo on the back, black jeans and a backpack. The file remains under investigation.
Britannia B & E
The Britannia Beach General Store was broken into and a large cache of cigarettes was stolen sometime overnight on Friday, July 22, police said. Two suspects were observed on the surveillance video. They gained entry to the west side of the building and entered the storage room. Police are not releasing descriptions of the suspects at this time.
Dog in hot car
Squamish RCMP helped remove an overheated dog from a vehicle on Thursday, July 21. At 1:45 p.m., police were called to the Stawamus Chief parking lot to assist with the removal of the dog. It was reported the dog had been inside the truck since 10 a.m. and the temperature inside the vehicle was 33 degrees, according to animal control. The truck’s window was open slightly, but the dog was panting heavily and becoming distressed. The animal was removed without having to break the window and seized by animal control. Police remind pet owners not to leave pets in vehicles and instead leave them at home or in a kennel. If pets have to be in a vehicle, owners must ensure they have adequate airflow, water and are parked in the shade.
Bike theft
A bike worth $1,500 was stolen from outside Tim Hortons on Garibaldi Way on Monday, July 18. At 2:13 p.m. the owner went inside the restaurant and left the "We the people" BMX bike leaning against the building. When he returned the bike was gone. The BMX is described as “Cadence” green with a metallic frame, black “Buck” bars, with front-wheel-set “Mission” blue, black spokes, and the seat is BSD black with Rasta Highlights. The suspect is described as wearing all black and riding the BMX by the CIBC bank.
Overheard target shooting
On Tuesday, July 19, Squamish RCMP received a report that someone was shooting a firearm in the wooded area northeast of Quest University. Numerous gunshots were heard. Police located a man using the area for target practice. He admitted to shooting in the area, stating he had a safe backdrop and thought he was far enough in the woods to not disturb anyone. The man, the RCMP said, did have a valid possession acquisition licence (PAL) and his firearm was properly unloaded and secured. The shooter was advised of numerous other areas to safely target shoot in the future.
Smash and go
Someone smashed the back window of a woman’s 2003 Mazda Protege when it was parked on Victoria Street, on Wednesday, July 20, police said. It's believed that nothing was taken from the vehicle. No one was seen in the area at the time.
Suspicious behaviour
At 3:23 a.m. on Wednesday, July 20, a Squamish resident called the RCMP to report an alarm at the London Drugs on Glenalder Place, Squamish RCMP said. Two people were heard yelling and spotted running southbound in the back alley, police said. Another person was then seen heading north on a skateboard. No description of the individuals was available. Police arrived and confirmed that all doors and windows of the building were secure. However, shortly after, security at the scene called the RCMP to advise they heard noises from the building’s roof. The door was locked, but footprints were discovered on the roof. The area was searched, but no one was located, nothing was tampered with or taken, police said.
