Caught in the act
Squamish RCMP caught a man as he made off with stolen goods from the Sandman Hotel on Jan. 9.  A hotel employee called police to report that a man had just stolen money and other items from the hotel’s front counter. The man ran out of the hotel and got into a vehicle that was quickly intercepted by the officers. He was arrested and charged for the theft, as well as several driving infractions. The stolen items were returned.

Injured skier

Squamish RCMP notified Squamish Search and Rescue after a skier was injured near Sky Pilot Trail on Jan. 8. She was unable to move due to a leg injury. Sea to Sky Gondola staff made contact with the skier before SAR arrived and helped her back to the base of the mountain.

Break-in with a backhoe

A backhoe was used to break into the Shell gas station on Highway 99 in an attempt to steal the ATM inside. Around 4:15 a.m. on Jan 4, Squamish RCMP were called in response to an alarm. When they arrived, officers saw that someone had broken into the main entrance and tried to remove the ATM. Review of surveillance footage shows that a man used a power saw in an attempt to dislodge the ATM after breaking into the main entrance. The theft was unsuccessful and the backhoe was found a kilometre away. This matter is still under investigation with the assistance of specialized units.

Attempt to break-in

It’s a good reminder to protect your home against break-ins. Someone rang the doorbell and then tried the door handle while people were inside a home in the 1800-block of Mamquam Road on Jan. 5. Squamish RCMP officers later saw marks on the door and dead bolt. Residents are reminded to get a trustworthy person to keep an eye on their property when they are away for an extended period of time. That trusted person should ensure that snow is shoveled and that flyers and newspapers are picked up on a daily basis.

Shed B&E

A bike and tools were stolen from a shed on Jan. 1. The suspect stole a green Santa Cruz Nomad bicycle, as well as several other items from the resident’s vehicle and shed in the 37000-block of Second Avenue. Other missing items include a drill, impactor, light, radio and a sander.
