Men in custody
Three men were arrested for possession of stolen property after a road and air police chase on Feb. 10, Squamish RCMP said. A stolen F350 Ford pickup truck entered Squamish jurisdiction while it was GPS tracked by its owner from the Lower Mainland. Police officers responded with the assistance of Air 1 and the truck was located deep in the Squamish Valley. The men are being held in custody pending the investigation, and their identities are not being released until formal charges have been approved.
Hikers rescued
The Squamish RCMP helped Squamish Search and Rescue find a pair lost hikers on Feb. 7. Two people hiked to Peaches and Cream Falls off the Squamish Valley Road to take nature photos. At 7 p.m., the Squamish RCMP received a calling reporting that the hikers had not returned. Police attempted to call both their cellphones, but the calls went straight to voicemail.
Both hikers were well-prepared with warm clothing, sleeping bags, water, food, a shovel and backpacks, although they had not planned on staying overnight. Both the RCMP and Search and Rescue attempted to drive to Peaches and Cream Falls, however, due to extremely poor road conditions were unable to make it past the 15-kilometre marker. The search was suspended and continued the next day.
In the morning, Squamish Search and Rescue located the hikers, who were uninjured and transported to the Squamish Airport.
Licence plates stolen
Someone switched the licence plates on a logging truck and replaced them with a different set of licence plates on Feb. 6. The plates were recovered in Surrey where the other set of plates were stolen from.
Car crash
A red vehicle ended up in the ditch on Highway 99, just north of the Porteau Cove overpass, on Feb. 9. The initial report to RCMP was that someone was trapped in the vehicle, however, when the Squamish RCMP arrived the driver was outside. There were no injuries or damage to the vehicle reported. Britannia Beach firefighters stayed on scene to ensure safety while the vehicle was towed away.
Car hit and run
Someone hit a woman’s SUV while it was parked at the Chances Casino, and then left the scene even though there was damage to the rear panel of the driver’s side door. The incident happened between Feb. 10 at 9 p.m. and Feb. 11 at 11 a.m.
Traffic hazard?
The Squamish RCMP were contacted about an apparent traffic hazard on Highway 99 close to the Conroy Creek Forest Service Road Feb. 9. A bus was parked on the road overnight and was partially blocking the southbound traffic lane and possibly impeding snowploughs. It was pulled over to the shoulder and had a number of traffic cones set up for traffic control behind it and, fortunately, was clearly visible to the southbound drivers, police concluded. The bus’ registered owner told police a tow company from the Lower Mainland was coming for the bus.
