Fire starters

Squamish RCMP were on site at the Porteau Cove campground on Thursday, Aug. 3, after campers decided to ignore park operators’ clear directions not to have a campfire. Officers could see a fire had been started at the campsite and issued the offender a $1,150 ticket under the Wildfire Act for having an open fire during a fire ban.

On Saturday Aug. 5, Squamish RCMP and Squamish Fire Department were dispatched to the Riverside Campground on the Ashlu Forestry Service Road to deal with campers who were ignoring the active provincial fire ban. The fire was still active when members arrived and the campers were issued a $1,150 ticket.

Squamish RCMP officers, conservation officers, firefighters and the fire warden are working together to ensure that our community is safe and that the provincial fire ban is fully abided by. The detachment has a zero-tolerance policy in regard to open fire and a $1,150 ticket will be issued accordingly when an open fire is located.

Vehicle break-ins

Six vehicles were rummaged through overnight on Monday, July 31 in the 38000 Block of Cherry Drive. Items of low-value and change were stolen from the vehicles, which might have been left unlocked as there was no mark of forced entry, police said. Squamish residents are being reminded to lock their vehicles door when not in use as theft from vehicles is an issue in our growing community.
