One night, two break-ins
A downtown restaurant was broken into overnight on Aug. 14, Squamish RCMP say. The back door of the restaurant was forced open and cash was stolen. That same night, officers say a downtown café was broken into and, again, money was stolen from the cash register. Police are investigating.
Illegal camping
After receiving several complaints of people camping overnight in the Smoke Bluffs parking lot, members of the Squamish RCMP attended the lot just after 3 a.m. on Aug. 14 and removed 13 vehicles. The campers were encouraged to use one of the legal campgrounds in the area.
In a separate case on Aug. 15, RCMP removed 25 vehicles around 4 a.m. after receiving several complaints of people camping overnight in the Squamish Estuary. The campers were warned that their garbage and food could attract wildlife and put nearby residents at risk, officers say.
Fraud stopped
An older man entered a store in Squamish on Aug. 15 while on his cellphone and appeared to be receiving directions from the person on the other end. He tried to purchase $3,600 worth of iTunes gift cards, as he was directed to do by whomever he was speaking with on the phone, but was stopped by a Good Samaritan who realized what was happening and called police, according to officers.
The man was advised that this is a scam and Canada Revenue Agency would never contact him on the phone to demand payment via iTunes and warned him not to follow through with similar requests in the future. Police say several reports of similar calls have been received, and they are warning people to be diligent with their personal information.
Cliff diver rescued
BC Ambulance contacted police on Aug. 16 to request help from the rescue of a cliff diver who had jumped off a 100-foot cliff into shallow water at Brohm Lake. Police say the jumper was successfully rescued with the assistance of Squamish Search and Rescue, and taken to Vancouver General Hospital by an air ambulance for treatment. It was later determined that the jumper had fractured his hips and leg, officers say.
B&E at Britannia Mine
There was a break-in at Britannia Mine Museum, police say. Officers say it appeared that someone had jumped the fence and stole tools from the carpentry shed. Police are asking the public for information about any suspicious vehicles seen in the area.
