Thefts from vehicles

Squamish RCMP received 12 complaints of theft from vehicles during this week.

Police say several items were stolen from vehicles that were often left unlocked.

Among the stolen items were wallets containing credit cards, which were eventually fraudulently used in local businesses, according to officers. Four thefts occurred in Valleycliffe, five in the Garibaldi Highlands, one in Brackendale, one in Downtown and one in Britannia Beach.

Attempted fraud

A complainant reported receiving a text message from the Canada Revenue Agency requesting him to pay money owed to the government on Sept. 25, say Squamish RCMP.

Officers say the message allegedly contained an Internet link which led to an online form on which the complainant provided personal information such as family members’ names and SIN number.

After discussing this matter with the RCMP and confirming the matter to be a fraud, the complainant reported the scam to the Anti-Fraud center of Canada.

Excessive speed

Police conducted a speed enforcement operation at the top of Furry Creek hill for vehicles travelling northbound toward Squamish on Sept. 25.

RCMP say an officer observed a motorcycle travelling at high rate of speed and passing all other vehicles as if they were parked.

Using his radar, the officer measured the motorcycle to be allegedly travelling at 187 kilometres per hour in a 90-kilometre zone, say police

Officers say the motorcycle was stopped and the driver was issued a $483 violation ticket for excessive speed.

The motorcycle was impounded for seven days and the driver received a 15-day driving prohibition under the provincial legislation, say RCMP.

Careless shooting

A complainant reported a female shooting a rifle toward the sand pit at Coast Aggregate located at 2500 Mamquam Rd on Oct. 1, Squamish RCMP say.

The subject of complaint was linked to a white four-door sedan which was parked in front of the business’s locked gates, no licence plate provided.

Police say the complainant told officers that while the female was shooting the firearm, two young children were playing in the dirt nearby.

Squamish RCMP quickly deployed to the area but neither the female nor the vehicle were found.

Illegal dumping

Squamish RCMP were informed about an illegal dumpsite near Porteau Cove on Oct. 1.

An officer attended and saw construction materials and chemical containers had been dumped into the wooded area, most likely to avoid disposal fees, police say.

Although the liquids had not spilled onto the ground, some of the containers were considered to be at risk for explosion, RCMP say.

A provincially-contracted hazardous material company attended the location and removed all items.
