Police briefs: accidental shooting, dog attack

Accidental shooting RCMP responded to a report of a midday shooting in the 900 block of Axen Road on Thursday, Nov. 6. The victim was struck in the foot, resulting in a minor injury, and was taken to hospital.

Accidental shooting
RCMP responded to a report of a midday shooting in the 900 block of Axen Road on Thursday, Nov. 6. The victim was struck in the foot, resulting in a minor injury, and was taken to hospital. According to the RCMP, the investigation revealed that it was an accidental discharge of a hunting rifle that caused the injury. The person with the rifle was arrested and the rifle was seized. Charges for Careless Use and Improper Storage of a firearm have been submitted.


Dog attack
A woman was bitten in the arm by a young dog in the 600 block of Lewis Drive on Friday, Nov. 7, RCMP report. The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment. The Integrated First Nations Police Unit is investigating the matter and working with Squamish Nation and the dog owner to determine the best course of action, police say.  


Bike theft
A Quest University student reported the theft of his mountain bike from outside the campus recreation centre on Tuesday, Nov. 4, sometime between 9:30 and 10:30 p.m. The investigation is still ongoing.


Drunk drivers targeted
On Friday, Nov. 7, counterattack roadblocks were set up at various locations in and around Squamish, resulting in numerous roadside-driving prohibitions being issued for periods ranging from seven to 90 days.  More counterattack roadblocks are planned as the Christmas season approaches.   


Shots fired
On Saturday, Nov. 8, RCMP received a report from two men on Mamquam Forest Service Road that several shots were fired in their direction. One bullet reportedly hit a tree 20 feet away from the men. The RCMP were deployed to the area and extensive patrols were made for a possible suspect vehicle, a newer-model, charcoal-grey Honda Accord. There was no sign of the vehicle.


Vehicle theft and drugs
An officer on patrol observed a scooter being driven through the red light at the intersection of Mamquam Road and Highway 99 on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 2:20 a.m. When RCMP attempted to stop the scooter, the driver fled, but was located hiding in a nearby alley, according to police. RCMP checks confirmed the scooter had been reported stolen. The scooter driver was arrested and a search of the driver revealed he was in possession of small amounts of ecstasy and heroin, police report. Charges of possession of stolen property as well as several Motor Vehicle Act charges, and possibly drug charges, will be recommended.
