Dog falls to death

Squamish Search and Rescue helped retrieve a dead dog on Wednesday, June 1, after the dog had fallen from a cliff on a Shannon Falls trail, according to RCMP. The dog’s owner had been hiking the trail by Shannon Creek from the Sea to Sky Gondola with the pet when both fell off a cliff, police said. The hiker managed to recover before falling far; however, the dog fell further and succumbed to its injuries. SAR members recovered the deceased dog.

Injured cyclist airlifted to city

A mountain biker is currently recovering from a head injury and is in stable condition at Vancouver General Hospital after a mountain bike accident on Wednesday, June 1, according to Squamish RCMP.

Police assisted B.C. Ambulance Service Wednesday with an injured mountain biker on Half Nelson Trail in the Garibaldi Highlands. The mountain biker was unresponsive, however, there was a doctor on scene, police said.

BCAS landed a helicopter at Quest University to transport the biker to Vancouver General Hospital, police said.

Dog rescued from hot car

Police responded to a dog locked in a Jeep parked in the direct sun at Black Tusk/Rubble Creek parking lot on Saturday, June 4, according to Squamish RCMP.  The dog was seen panting heavily, had no water and the windows were only opened only a crack, police said.

A concerned bystander was able to use a stick to unlock the door and remove the dog before the police arrived. A police officer noted the temperature was hotter inside the car than the outside air, which was about 28C, police said. The dog was seized and transported to the SPCA.

The owner contacted the police and said they left for a hike around 9 a.m. and returned back at 3:30 p.m. The owners said they hadn’t thought about the heat and also didn't expect to be gone as long as they were, according to police. They were informed about the risks of leaving a dog inside a vehicle in the direct sun without adequate airflow and water, police said.

Bikes stolen

A Specialized Pitch mountain bike was stolen from the Save-On-Foods Tuesday, May 31 on Pemberton Avenue, police said. The owner had been shopping in the store when the bike was stolen, according to Squamish RCMP. The bike is described as having red handlebars, white grips and a “Squampton” sticker on it. The matter is under investigation.

A Grey Arashi mountain bike valued at $250 was stolen from underneath a deck on Westway Avenue on Wednesday, June 1, police said. The bike had been left unlocked. The theft is being investigated.

Squamish RCMP are asking all bike owners to assist police by taking a photo of their bicycle and documenting the serial number. Most bicycle serial numbers can be located under the crankshaft on the main frame. Regardless of the value of the bicycle, when it gets recovered, the police are able to return the property to the rightful owner, Squamish RCMP said.

Thefts from vehicles

Several items were stolen from a 1995 Honda Accord while it was parked at Clarke Drive and Highway 99 on Wednesday, June 1, police said. Items taken include a Panasonic car CD/Aux stereo, a black Osprey 32-litre backpack with $150 worth of avalanche gear – a Go Pro Hero 3, a beacon, Probe, Black Diamond shovel, neon orange Anti-Hero skateboard, Burton snowshoes and electric goggles. The car was parked between May 31 and June 1, police said.  The investigation continues.

Also on Wednesday, June 1, an owner of a 2015 white Dodge Ram called the Squamish RCMP to report that someone had broken into the truck when it was parked on Government Road. The owner stated that someone entered the vehicle during the night and rummaged through it. The only item taken was $280 gold-coloured women’s Ray-Ban sunglasses. The theft is still under investigation.

A wallet was stolen from a grey Ford pickup truck parked on Government Road on Thursday, June 2, police said. Before the owner had called police, a credit card from the wallet was used in Vancouver, according to the RCMP.

Squamish RCMP remind residents to remove all valuables from their vehicles, especially overnight, and any efforts to make it harder for thieves are strongly suggested.

Vehicle window smashed

A white Neon parked at the Starbucks located at Glenalder Place had its passenger side window smashed on Tuesday, May 31. The incident took place between 12 and 1:30 p.m., police said. Nothing was stolen from the vehicle.
