Lego thieves strike again

Two repeat thieves were arrested on Tuesday, Nov. 24 after Squamish RCMP received a report of a Lego theft in progress at Wal-Mart involving the same person who had reportedly stolen $2,500 worth of Lego last week.

A security guard from Wal-Mart saw the suspect loading Lego into the cart and leaving the store from the side door as he had done last week, police said.

The suspect was seen being picked up by another man driving a black Mazda Tribute. All Squamish RCMP officers on duty responded and quickly located the men heading south on Discovery Way. The suspects’ SUV almost collided with another vehicle, police said. Officers stopped the suspects on Highway 99 south of Industrial Way.

The $750 worth of stolen Lego was visible in the vehicle, according to the RCMP report. The driver and passenger were arrested and face additional charges of theft and possession of stolen property.

Stawamus Chief rockslide

A piece of the Stawamus Chief fell on Tuesday Nov. 24, Squamish RCMP report. Officers first received a report from a resident of Plateau Drive of a rumbling sound and a small cloud of dust in the valley on the east side of the Stawamus Chief, but nothing was initially discovered by police.

Squamish Search and Rescue then confirmed they had received a video showing there had been a small slide and officers were able to see the area of the slide on the backside of the Chief, in the Slhaney area. The slide appeared to be small and no injuries were reported.

A geotechnical assessment will be done to ensure the area is stable and safe, police said.

Collision at Cheakamus Canyon

A woman was slightly injured but a young child was unharmed in a single-vehicle collision on Highway 99 northbound at Cheakamus Canyon on Sunday, Nov. 29, police reported.

The vehicle hit the rock face causing extensive damage to its front end. The motor became completely detached and ended up on the other side of the highway, west of the southbound lanes. Based on witness accounts, it is believed the crash was because of speeding and perhaps some black ice, police said.

Arrest for obstruction

A man was arrested after RCMP officers responded to a 3 a.m. report of a suspicious person in a construction site in the 38100 block of Loggers Lane on Thursday, Nov. 26.  The man was throwing lumber and knocking down fencing on the site, police said.

Officers patrolled the area and saw a man matching the description of the suspect riding a bike on Logger’s Lane. When the officers attempted to engage him in conversation, he was verbally and physically abusive, police report. He was arrested for obstruction.

Charges of mischief, obstruction and assaulting a peace officer are being recommended.

Impaired driving

A man faces charges of impaired driving after being arrested downtown on Saturday, Nov. 28.  He was stopped on Carson Place and failed a breathalyzer test after an officer on patrol in the downtown core observed a vehicle being driven erratically – driving in the oncoming lane, signaling right and then turning left – and pulled it over.

The driver showed signs of impairment, such as a strong smell of liquor on his breath and slurred speech, and he acknowledged he had been drinking, according to the RCMP report.
