Police are investigating a break-in, theft and vandalism at the Power House Springs power generating plant last week that resulted in damage and losses with an estimated total value of $20,000.
The incident occurred early Friday (Oct. 28). According to RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride, a Squamish police officer conducting patrols at around 3 a.m. on Power House Springs Road found that a gate leading to the power generating facility had been cut. Upon further investigation it was found that another gate had had its lock cut off and within the power station compound, two vehicles had had their windows smashed.
Stolen from the site were chainsaws, miscellaneous tools and copper wire, Pride said. Those with information about the incident are asked to phone Squamish RCMP at (604) 892-6100 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
Laptop stolen
Last Wednesday (Oct. 26), a business in the 1100 block of Hunter Place was broken into overnight and a laptop computer was stolen. The perpetrator(s) gained entry by prying open a window, Pride said. Unfortunately, an on-site alarm system had not been activated before the break-in occurred, he said.
Officer assaulted
A 49-year-old Squamish resident is facing charges of breach of probation and assaulting a police officer as a result of an incident that occurred last Wednesday at a local shelter.
Police officers responding to a report of an intoxicated man at the establishment arrived at the shelter to find that the man had left the shelter, but located the man shortly thereafter, Pride said.
As a result of another investigation, the man had been placed under conditions not to consume alcohol, conditions he had clearly breached last week, Pride said. The man was belligerent and uncooperative as police were booking him into cells and attempted to physically assault an officer. No one was injured in the incident.
Bait car stolen
A 34-year-old Squamish man was arrested on Friday (Oct. 28) along Westway Avenue in Valleycliffe, allegedly after he stole a vehicle that was being used as part of a bait car program. The suspect is well known to police and in addition to theft of a motor vehicle, is facing numerous charges including driving while disqualified, breach of probation and breach of a recognizance in relation to prior investigations, Pride said.
Attempted stabbing
On Tuesday (Nov. 1), Squamish RCMP responded to a report of a disturbance in the 37000 block of Fifth Avenue in downtown Squamish. A female had allegedly threatened a male with a knife during an argument and attempted to stab him. A 24-year-old Squamish resident was arrested near the scene and is being charged in relation to the incident, Pride said.
