Briefs from the Squamish RCMP

Police have reissued a request for tips from the public relating to the Dec. 13, 2009 fire that destroyed a townhouse complex on Government Road.

"We're pretty satisfied that it didn't start by itself," said Cpl. Dave Ritchie.

At 5 a.m. on Dec. 13, 2009, police responded to a report of a row of town houses on fire.

The complex was completely engulfed in flames by the time firefighters reached the scene.

All occupants of the complex were able to get out of their residences, however the buildings were completely destroyed. At this time the overall estimate of the property damage is $1,000,000.

"If anybody was around and anybody saw or heard anything that hasn't come forward sometimes people [come forward] if we reiterated that it is an arson with a lot of dollar value and could've been a lot worse for life loss, let alone the inconveniences caused to date," said Ritchie.

A male and female were spotted leaving the scene, which led investigators to two youths, aged 14, who cannot be named.

"We did get a report from a citizen of similar described youth being around there," said Ritchie. "We don't have any evidence that they did anything yet, but whether they've been exonerated I don't know."

The youths were identified by investigators as having possibly been involved, and were questioned and released, states a news release.

"The investigation is continuing however the police are in need of the public's assistance and are asking anyone who may have information to come forward," states the release.
