Police are asking for help in identifying the culprit behind a chilling assault on a 60-year-old woman on Halloween, Sunday (Oct. 31).
The victim, a Squamish resident, was walking alone on a trail along Mamquam River near the Mashiter River at approximately 4 p.m. Sunday when she noticed a man standing off the trail wearing an elongated white mask made famous by the movie Scream, according to a RCMP report.
He was also wearing black hoodie, jeans and running shoes.
He ran toward her causing her to turn and run away, but he quickly caught up to her and dragged her to the ground. She got away after managing to strike him with a rock several times and fleeing on foot. That was the last she saw of the suspect.
The victim never saw the man's face but she described him as being Caucasian, slim and approximately five foot seven inches with brown or possibly reddish hair.
He had no discernible accent.
Since the suspect was struck several times with a rock, he may have injuries to the wrists or elbow.
If anyone is aware of a person who was out on Halloween afternoon or evening wearing a similar mask who now has injuries to either the wrist or elbow please call the Squamish RCMP at 604 892-6100.
For those wishing to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 anytime 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Names, addresses or your telephone numbers will not be requested. You do not have to testify in court. A cash reward of up to $2,000 will be paid for any information leading to an arrest and charge.
