Local RCMP arrested two men, aged 48 and 43, in conjunction with the discovery of a marijuana grow operation in the 2200 block of Read Crescent.

On Dec. 29, RCMP were conducting surveillance on the residence, which was purchased last fall.

Police discovered the house had not been lived in, but rather housed a marijuana grow operation consisting of "several hundred marijuana plants", according to Cpl. Dave Ritchie of the local RCMP detachment.

The two males arrested hail from the Lower Mainland and were released from custody and will appear in Provincial Court on March 8, 2006 to face charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking in relation to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Ritchie said the grow op was a departure from what is usually seen in the area, as the house was specifically purchased to house the operation.

"It had been purchased specifically with the intention of setting up a grow operation," he said. "This is how profitable this kind of operation is, when they can buy a house just for it."

All seven adults arrested in the raids were held and then released on conditions with charges forwarded to Crown Counsel for approval. Charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Trafficking in a Controlled Substance and Illegal Possession and Unsafe Storage of Firearms have been recommended.

Police report the woman had been partying at another residence and had returned home to have a smoke in her garage, when a man wearing a wet, dark hoodie assaulted her by striking her in the face, knocking her down. The male, described as tall, about 30 to 40 years old, fled the scene afterwards.

"It happened very fast," said Ritchie. "It is unclear if he was already in the garage trying to break into the house, or if he had entered after she did. We think it is a random attack."

The woman suffered facial and rib injuries.
