Organizers of Pride Squamish were hoping to build on the success of its inaugural event in 2019.
However, as with so many plans these days, they went out the window in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
President Tabitha McIntyre said in an email that the organization was cancelling all of its summer fundraisers as well as the main event planned for Sept. 5 as a precaution to avoid spreading the virus.
But, McIntyre encouraged people to continue to mark the event in a responsible, physically distant manner by putting up pride flags, rainbow bunting, wearing bright colours, calling a friend, or blasting a favourite queer anthem.
"Pride is more than just an event; it's a feeling and a community!" she wrote. "Pride Squamish are looking at ways to make the event virtual, but the sense of community and love won't be lost."
In 2019, Pride Squamish welcomed roughly 700 attendees with around 80 people taking part in the march.
"There's clearly a want for a pride celebration in Squamish with local businesses, the District and individuals coming together to help support the creation of a new not-for-profit and positive Queer Spaces," McIntyre wrote.
