Squamish Elementary School's parent advisory council (PAC) is aiming to build the community's first accessible playground.
It is something we have wanted for a long time, the council's chair Jennifer Cameron said. It would be nice to have one that any kid can play at.
On Monday (June 18), the Sea to Sky School District received a $50,000 provincial grant to put toward that goal. The money comes from $8 million dedicated last year by Premier Christy Clark for new and upgraded facilities throughout the province. The cash is a part of the final phase of the playground funding commitment, Sea to Sky MLA Joan McIntyre said.
I think it is an excellent way of using the dollars, she added.
Seventy-five per cent of money raised by the Squamish Elementary School PAC goes toward playgrounds, Cameron said. Last year, the parents funded a $18,000 playground at the school.
It takes a lot of time to raise that money, Cameron said.
The District of Squamish is also busy upgrading its playgrounds, Mayor Rob Kirkham said. The process is a part of the municipality's yearly capital budget, with two to three projects targeted annually.
The district is in the midst of renovating Stan Clarke Park, Kirkham noted, adding plans include a playground.
That is a major one, he said.
