Public library turns 50

This is a special year for the Squamish Public Library as 50 years of service to the residents of Squamish is commemorated. Please join the staff, the Library Board and invited guests to celebrate this special day on Sunday, Feb. 5 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Please join the staff, the Library Board and invited guests to celebrate this special day on Sunday, Feb. 5 from 1 to 3 p.m. when a special anniversary cake is cut and shared over coffee. There will be photo albums to look through to catch a glimpse of the library's history. You are also invited to share a special memory of the library on memory cards. Also, if you have any memorabilia pertaining to the library that you would like to donate, it would be much appreciated. There will also be a 50/50 draw to help support the library.

It's GrassRoots Jam time at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Sunday, Feb. 5 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Mark your calendar for the first Sunday of each month for this special evening. Everyone is welcome and the numbers are growing each month. You can play an instrument and participate or lay low and listen. See you there.

The Global Awareness Club at Howe Sound Secondary School is holding a garage sale and bake sale in the Brennan Park Recreation Centre auditorium on Saturday, Feb. 11 from 9 a.m. until noon. Your donations for either of the sales would really help out these young people. To donate or to have goods picked up, please call Safeena at 604-898-5878 and leave a message. Proceeds from the sale will go to the Emmanuel Boys' Centre in Nairobi.

Seniors, 55 years and up are welcome to join the Eldercollege course in French Conversation at the Capilano College, Squamish Campus. This is a popular program and the instructor is Judith Vetsch. It will be held eight Tuesdays starting Feb. 7 to March 28 and the time is 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. for each session. The cost is $30. If you wish more information, please call the college at 604-892-5322.

The Squamish Food Bank will open its doors on Wednesday, Feb. 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Trinity Hall, Squamish United Church on Fourth Avenue. Anyone wishing to make a cash donation is asked to mail it care of the SFB, Box 207, Garibaldi Highlands, V0N 1T0.

Mark the calendar for Friday, Feb. 10 when you are invited to take your sweetie for a Valentine Skate at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre arena from 8:40 to 9:40 p.m. Still on a Valentine theme, there is dance classes on this special day, Feb. 14 including ballroom/Latin Mix level 2, Swing level 2 and Salsa level 1. In the Foyer Gallery at the Squamish Public Library on Saturday, Feb. 11, there is a reception and opportunity to meet artist Karen Goodfellow from 1 to 3 p.m. Do take time to view the paintings, gourds, and altered "Gypsy" tambourines. A harpist will be at this reception and refreshments will be served.

It's been a little muddy on some of the trails but the members of the Hearts in Motion Walking Club still enjoy their Friday walks. On Friday, Feb. 10, please meet at the Tantalus Seniors' Centre at 9:30 a.m. Call me at 604-815-0152 if you wish more information.

A group of residents are lobbying for a Pitch and Putt golf course in Squamish. It would be a terrific recreation for seniors, their families and friends and would be ideal for golfing beginners. Everyone can learn to golf on a pitch and putt course. There are sign-up sheets being circulated and if you are interested, please sign it. The annual film festival at the Brackendale Art Gallery will be held on March 4 and 5. Everyone from students to professionals are welcome to enter with the theme being the wonders of the natural world. Films must be no longer than 20 minutes. Pianist Janina Fialkowska is returning to Squamish on Friday, Feb. 24 for a concert at the Eagle Eye Theatre sponsored by the Howe Sound Performing Arts Association. Please note, the ticket prices are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students and university and college students. Tickets are available at Billie's Bouquet, Mostly Books and the Sea to Sky Hotel.

There is much going on at the Squamish Public Library this week. On Tuesday (Feb. 7) the library is proud to present Self Discovery through art with Sophie Brunet. This is an exploration of the process of expression through visual art. There is no charge and you are asked to be at the meeting room from 7 to 9 p.m. Please register at the library or phone 604-892-3110. This presentation will be appropriate for older children, families and adults.

Howe Sound School District No. 48 is offering many community education winter courses including Adult ESL (adult English as a second language), computer courses, certification courses, first aid courses, health and wellness and business management.
