Rafters allegedly threatened with rifle

Weekly briefs from the Squamish RCMP

A North Vancouver man faces charges of uttering threats and pointing a firearm after an incident that occurred last week in the Squamish Valley.

Last Tuesday (July 23) at around 4:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a male threatening two other males with a rifle in the area of the 15-kilometre marker on the Squamish Valley Road, RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride wrote in an email.

The two males had decided to go rafting in the area and had turned onto a dirt road near the Squamish River when they were approached by a man driving a black Mazda pickup truck. The man got out of his vehicle and asked the two why they were in the area, telling them they were on private property his property, Pride said.

When the rafters raised questions about the issue, the man took a rifle out of his truck and pointed it at them, Pride said. The alleged victims quickly left the area and called police.

Officers cordoned off the area and an RCMP Emergency Response Team and Police Dog Services were called in. At around 6 p.m., a black 2000 Mazda pickup truck was seen approaching a stop sign at the intersection of Paradise Valley Road, driven by a male matching the description of the suspect. He was arrested and taken to the RCMP detachment.

Investigation has revealed that the man does not own the property where the incident occurred, Pride said. The 37-year-old from North Vancouver faces charges of uttering threats, pointing a firearm and careless use of firearm. No firearm was located, however, and the investigation is ongoing.

Cyclist injured

Police are asking for the public's help in locating a suspect in a hit-and-run incident involving a motor vehicle and a cyclist that occurred on July 19.

At around 9 p.m., an officer was approached by a cyclist who said he had been struck by a car at around 7 p.m. while cycling northbound on Government Road at the intersection with Garibaldi Way. The cyclist was in the intersection when an approaching vehicle ran the stop sign and, while making a right turn onto Government, struck the victim's front tire, knocking the cyclist to the ground.

The vehicle did not stop. The victim, who required stitches for a head injury he suffered in the incident, said the driver appeared to be a darker-skinned young male. He was driving a blue compact sport vehicle, possibly a Hyundai or Honda, with a loud muffler. Anyone with information is asked to call Squamish RCMP at (604) 892-6100 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

A trailer had its door pried open and a black Panasonic TV was stolen, as were several hundred dollars' worth of diesel fuel used for emergency vehicles. Forensic evidence was gathered at the scene as part of the investigation.

On Friday (July 26) at around 3:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance on Cleveland Avenue near Vancouver Street. At the scene, police arrested a 69-year-old Squamish man for allegedly assaulting his 55-year-old girlfriend. The couple had an argument that turned physical, with the woman allegedly throwing rocks at the man and him allegedly assaulting her, Pride said.

Two face drug charges

On Friday (July 26), Squamish RCMP arrested two 58-year-old Squamish residents near Loggers Lane and Highway 99. The males, described as well known to police, were arrested with two grams of crack cocaine and a quantity of cash, Pride said. Police are pursuing charges of trafficking in a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking.
