Read Crescent home damaged

Cause of March 30 fire under investigation

Squamish Fire Rescue (SFR) officials are investigating the cause of a recent early-morning fire that caused extensive damage to a home on Read Crescent.

Fire Chief Russ Inouye on Friday (April 5) said investigators believe the blaze that was first reported on March 30 at 1:11 a.m. started in the exterior of the house. While arson was still viewed as a possible cause, we don't have a strong case for arson at this point, Inouye said, adding that investigators still had not completed all their post-fire interviews.

Under such circumstances, we go through a full investigation and we try not to take any assumptions on it, and we make our determination based on the facts, he said.

The house, a sprawling rancher that was probably built in the late 1960s, was about 25 per cent involved in flames when firefighters arrived, Inouye said. Four fire vehicles, two command vehicles and 21 firefighters responded, he said.

About half of the house was involved in flames by the time firefighters began pouring water on it, Inouye said. Once the trucks were on scene and had their water supplies established, it was probably a couple minutes before the flames were extinguished, he said.
