Transit users in Squamish will be able to predict buses down to the minute this summer.
BC Transit announced April 23 that “NextRide” real-time technology would be installed in buses across the province in 2018. Squamish will get the technology over the summer.
Customers will be able to see the location of their bus, as well as an estimated arrival time based on real-time data rather than the estimated schedule.
When on board, passengers will be able to see and hear upcoming stop details to make the system more accessible.
The new technology will be implemented in Nanaimo first this month, followed by the Comox Valley in June and Squamish and Whistler during the summer.
The system will be implemented in Kamloops, Kelowna, and Victoria later in the year.
“These service upgrades will be hugely helpful for people who already ride the bus and a great incentive for more people to start,” said Claire Trevena, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, in a statement.
“We are committed to making BC Transit service more convenient and accessible, and I expect transit users will be thrilled with these improvements,” she said.
The entire system will cost $6.74 million to implement, according to BC Transit. Funding for the project is from the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund.
