RCMP swarmed a North Burnaby neighbourhood late Saturday night following a stabbing that put a 17-year-old male in hospital.
Just before midnight last night Burnaby fire crews, police and paramedics were called to the area of Hastings Street and Kensington Avenue - located a block from Burnaby North Secondary School - for a report of a stabbing.
When crews arrived, they found a male laying on the ground at the Shell gas station suffering from a stab wound. The male was transported to hospital by paramedics with non-life-threatening injuries.
There was a crowd of 50 to 70 teens in the area and several youth were spotted standing next to the victim as police investigated. A police helicopter and canine were called in to help search the area for the suspect.
"It’s believed a group of people had been partying in the area, and a confrontation occurred between several people before the stabbing happened," Burnaby RCMP said in a news release. "The circumstances of the incident are still under investigation and investigators are working to determine a motive. Evidence is being assessed to determine what charges may be considered. It’s believed the suspect and victim are not known to each other."
A Kensington Avenue resident told the NOW that they heard “yelling” from a large group of people and that it sound like a fight involving numerous people.
“There was a lot of shouting from a group of teenagers,” said the resident, who declined to give their name.
A 17-year-old Burnaby resident has been arrested.
