Residents concerned about new development

A group of Brackendale residents are coming together over yet another development proposal. A planned residential project is slated at the opposite end of Brennan Road, from the controversial Greg Gardner development.

Residents have scheduled a meeting at the Brackendale Art Gallery at 7 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 2) to discuss what they want for their community. But a few residents already know what they don't want.

"I've got nothing against development," said nearby resident John Beeke. "But they're going to have high density in rural areas, and my concern is also that we are in a flood plane. And it isn't left to the municipality, it will come out of the owners' pockets. It's the owners' problem."

Nearby resident Beverly Carson also said that she doesn't oppose development, but is concerned about density and flooding. Carson also said that she feels the manner in which development applications get processed is unacceptable.

"It seems an underhanded way for rezoning proposals to be made public," she said, referring to newspaper ads depicting a plot of land and lot number. "We don't even know our own lot numbers."

Beeke had the same concerns.

"I don't think the municipality gives people enough time to learn up on the issue," he said. "It goes through so fast, by the time you get your reading done it's too late. Most people aren't really aware of what's going on."

Developer Grant Gillies had yet to file a development application by press time. So details of the new development, initially called Parcel H and bordering the Gillies' developed Paddocks townhouses, were not available at press time. Gillies met with Heather Evans of the district planning department as well as district engineers during a pre-development meeting Wednesday (Oct. 26) and is expected to follow-up with an [email protected]
