Local cadet off to Whitehorse to speak at nationals

A Squamish cadet brought home top honours at a provincial public speaking competition on the weekend, earning her a trip to the national competition next month.

Sgt. Calista Ryan of the 835 Griffin Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron was awarded the gold medal at the Air Cadet League of Canada Provincial Effective Speaking Competition on Sunday (April 27) in Richmond.

Warrant Officer II Savannah Groot of the 259 Panther RCACS of Penticton earned the silver and Sgt. Tamir Somerville of the 135 Bell-Irving Squadron from Vancouver earned the bronze. Cadets from Penticton, Kimberley, Prince George, Delta, Langley, Burnaby, Vancouver and Victoria took part.

Ryan will represent B.C. at the Air Cadet League National Effective Speaking Competition in Whitehorse, Yukon, in June. She will be competing against cadets from all across Canada.

During the B.C. competition each cadet presents a five- to six-minute prepared speech as well as a two- to three-minute impromptu speech. 

The Cadet Program is the largest youth organization in Canada co-sponsored by the Air Cadet League of Canada and the Department of Defence. The Cadet Program aims to instill leadership and citizenship qualities in young people and to encourage their involvement in the community.
