The Squamish Arts Council (SAC) is in the midst of creating a cultural hub in the heart of Squamish.
In 2004, SAC set about opening up the downtown SAC building's doors to other user groups, but the initiative didn't get off the ground, SAC chair Jan Durocher said. Now the plan is back on the table and moving forward.
The arts council is 90 per cent administration part of that is helping groups with their administration, she told The Chief.
The idea is to allow different groups to hold meetings and gatherings in the building in Pavilion Park. The arts council hopes to turn the facility into an arts and cultural hub for Squamish, Durocher said. Each group will be provided with its own lockable filing cabinet, allowing any member to access needed information at any time.
We will be able to help organizations with grants, setting up filing systems and software programs; anything to help strengthen their club, Durocher added, noting many small groups struggle with the administrative side of their affairs.
The centre's hours coincide with Squamish's Farmers' Market on Saturdays in the summer. SAC hopes to expand hours to Friday, Durocher said. Organizations interested in using the space must have a SAC membership.
The council is hunting for tables, chairs and filing cabinets that can be donated to the facility. Anyone with those items, or who is interested in adding a group's name to the hub's list of user groups, should email [email protected].
The arts council is also encouraging local arts and cultural organizations and artists to add their profiles to SAC's new website. It's a resource for the community, Durocher said, noting SAC's goal is to support community groups.
We are really trying to get the message out there, Durocher said.
