Sale of Mining Museum lot agreed

The sale of a six-acre prime commercial lot owned by the BC Mining Museum to Macdonald Development was passed by members of the Britannia Beach Historical Society at an Extraordinary Meeting held in Vancouver on Tuesday (Aug.8).

The site, known as Lot 1, covers much of the commercial space in front of the museum and currently includes The Cassiar Mountain Jade Store, the Amber Gold Trail and several historic properties.

"It was a fabulously positive meeting," said Kirstin Clausen, executive director of the museum. "Members were interested in the standard questions, much of which were outlined in our fact sheet."

Just 20 of the society's 400 members attended the meeting at the Vancouver Club in person, while 60 others left proxies. Clausen said quorum was five members, nevertheless all but one member who participated voted in favour of the sale.

"From here we begin the consultation process with Britannia Bay Properties [the local subsidiary of Macdonald Development] to develop a plan," said Clausen. "How we proceed will be determined by that.

"It's going to be a fun project, exciting and we will certainly be finding the balance between what Macdonald Development wants to do and what we want to do."

Jerry Bordian, vice-president of Britannia Bay Properties, said that work is likely to begin on the site this fall to build a "commercial operations and office environment" on the site.
