Students are returning to schools in Squamish, including Howe Sound Secondar.

In Squamish, of those who were invited to return, 61% of elementary students and 51% of middle and secondary students went back to school on June 1.

"All schools reported the first two days back at school for students as successful," said Sea to Sky School District spokesperson Jennifer Morris in an email to The Chief.

"Staff were happy to see their students, and our students were excited to see their teachers and classmates."

An easing of COVID-19 restrictions in B.C. has meant that children were allowed back in class at the start of the month.

However, these attendance numbers represent the percentages of students invited back — not everyone is permitted back each day because the province has imposed density caps on schools.

On any given day, half of the kindergarten to Grade 5 population is allowed in class.

Grades 6 to 12 are allowed to operate at up to 20% capacity.

As a result, a rotating schedule has been set up for different students to come to class on different days.

However, attendance is still available five days a week for children of essential service workers, students with disabilities/diverse abilities, and students who require additional support.

By June 2, 67% of elementary students invited back attended, which represents 31% of Squamish's total elementary school population, according to Morris.

Half of the middle and secondary students invited back attended, which represents 9.6% of the town's total middle/secondary school population, not including international students.

By comparison, throughout the entire Sea to Sky School District, which includes Whistler and Pemberton, 63% of students showed up on June 2nd. This is 22% of the entire school population (less international students)
